The Flyby #5
Wtf happened in 1971, spy planes turned nerdy, and USA vs Canada hockey
America’s Gold
Earlier this week, Elon Musk’s DOGE was encouraged to audit Fort Knox, where about half of the nation’s gold reserves are vaulted.
All I know about Fort Knox is from Goldfinger—the James Bond villain—whose mission was to blow the place up. Well, and it’s an Army base, so it probably smells like strippers and Rip It.
However, what does come to mind is this website: WTF Happened in 1971?—the year the US decoupled the dollar from the gold standard.
Zone 2 Training
I’ve become increasingly interested in Zone 2 training ever since I first heard Peter Attia emphasize its importance.
The benefits of Zone 2 training range from maximizing fat burning on a sporting level to actually increasing mitochondrial function on a physiological level.
Interestingly enough, more and more research is being done to understand the connection between metabolic health, mitochondrial fitness, and cancer.
U-2 Spy Plane Joy Ride
Sam Eckholm, Air Force Officer turned Youtuber, goes around making fascinating videos of military aircraft from an insider’s perspective. Inside the cockpit inside. Yeah, dream job.
This week he got to fly in the legendary U-2 Spy Plane. Primarily designed for high-altitude reconnaissance, it’s now even used for atmospheric research!
Fun fact, similar to Pail from last week, I used to fly with an instructor who now flies the WB-57 for NASA—also a high-altitude research aircraft.
Growler Crashes in San Diego
Last week an E/A-18G Growler from VAQ-135 crashed into the San Diego Bay after attempting to land at NAS North Island.
Thankfully no one was injured and the investigation is ongoing.
USA vs Canada
In what is always one of the greatest matchups in sports: USA and Canada matched up in the 4 Nations Face-Off on Saturday. And it was insane.
After fans in Montreal booed the American national anthem, three different fights broke out in the first 9 minutes of the game. And yes, of course the Tkachuk brothers were involved. Electric.
The US went on to win 3-1 and will now play in the championship on Thursday night. I think we’re all hoping it’ll be a Canada rematch.
