The Flyby #4
Spending smarter, "egg cooking hacks they don't want you to know", and dogfighting the T-45
Department of Will Paige Efficiency
One of my New Year’s resolutions has been to reduce my spending.
Actually, I guess it would be to “spend more efficiently,” i.e., to cut down on spending that doesn't bring me real value. This, in turn, allows me to spend more on things I really enjoy like an impromptu mini-vacation to a neighboring city.
Nothing can prevent you from pulling out your credit card for another shitty, overpriced coffee from Dunkin’ that you swore you’d never buy again. However, I’ve been using a budgeting app, Copilot, with a spending tracker planted on my home screen, which has been incredibly useful.
Time will tell if this keeps up but so far the progress has been promising—specifically, I’ve gotten rid of at least four subscriptions I didn’t know I had. Classic.
Pull-up world record
Truett Hanes, son of ultra-runner/bowhunter/freak-of-nature Cam Hanes, just set the world record for the most pull-ups in a 24-hour window. Coming in at 10,001 reps, this record dwarves previous records set by legends like David Goggins’s 7,801. And it’s safe to say he’s no slouch himself.
Eggs-perimentation
In news we’ve all been waiting for, scientists finally figured out how to boil the perfect egg. I love using the nondescript term “scientists”; it adds so much unwarranted credibility.
Anyway, apparently, if you have a mere 32 minutes to spare, you can turn a snack that normally takes 6 minutes to make into an ordeal so extravagant it requires a sous vide and a severely limited social life.
The quote “I am neither rich enough in time nor poor enough in money to do this myself” roughly comes to mind.
Here’s an image of eggs pretending to be scientific data:
Goshawk Jams
Growler Jams, a YouTube channel run by Pail, one of my favorite former flight instructors, recently released this awesome POV dogfighting video in the T-45.
He’s filmed some incredible videos like carrier ops and formation flying but this newest was just so cool I had to share it.
Record snowfall in Japan
As a professional “Hey look, it’s snowing!” person, I love a good snowstorm. Last week Japan got dumped on when over four feet of snow blessed the northern end of Japan. Many reporting stations set snowfall records not seen since the 80’s.
It’s always impossible to time the weather but if you happened to have planned your ski trip during this period of snowfall… Jealousy doesn’t even begin to describe it.
It turns out, I’m not the only one who gets pulled into a state of trance when it snows. Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort is reporting a growing number of skiers getting lost in the backcountry, chasing that dreamy fresh pow. I can’t say I blame them but I do hope they’re found.
